Most people wear their engagement ring and wedding band together for decades. That is why it is worth thinking about how the two rings will sit next to each other – ideally already when choosing the engagement ring.
Engagement ring vs. wedding band: what is the difference?
The engagement ring is given at the proposal and usually features a prominent centre diamond. The wedding band is exchanged at the wedding and is typically simpler – a plain band or a ring set with smaller diamonds all the way or halfway around, known as an eternity or mémoire ring. Many couples wear both rings on the same finger afterwards.
Check the setting height first
Whether a wedding band sits flush against your engagement ring depends mainly on the setting. If the diamond sits high on claws with open space underneath, a straight band slides beneath it and both rings sit close together. Low settings, bezels and many halo designs reach down to the finger – then a straight band leaves a small gap. That is not a flaw: some people like the gap, others prefer a curved or notched band that follows the shape of the engagement ring.
Match the metal – or mix it on purpose
The classic choice is the same metal and the same gold colour for both rings, so they look like a set. Mixing yellow and white gold can look very modern, as long as it is a deliberate decision. One practical point: platinum is harder than gold, so a platinum ring worn directly next to a gold ring can wear the gold faster over time. Our precious metals guide explains the differences.
Balance the widths
Delicate engagement rings with a band of around 2 mm look best with a wedding band of similar or slightly smaller width. Too wide a wedding band can visually overpower a fine solitaire. If you love a bold look, you can do the opposite and let a wider band frame a small centre stone.
Plain band or eternity ring?
- Plain band: timeless, puts the focus on the engagement ring and is easy to resize later.
- Half eternity: diamonds only on the top half – sparkling from the front, comfortable in daily wear.
- Full eternity: diamonds all the way round – maximum sparkle, but the size is hard to change later, so measure carefully.

Stacking: more than two rings
Many people add a third ring over the years – for an anniversary or the birth of a child. A classic stack is the engagement ring framed by one band on each side. If you already plan for this, a solitaire with a high setting and slim bands of around 2 mm leaves you the most options.
Bring your engagement ring into the decision
The easiest way to find a matching wedding band is to try it with your engagement ring. If that is not possible, send us a photo of your ring from the side and tell us the metal and ring size – we will advise you personally on which band fits best, or create a custom-made band that follows your engagement ring exactly.
