How to Buy an Engagement Ring: A 7-Step Guide

Choosing an engagement ring is one of the most personal purchases you will ever make. The good news: once you know which decisions matter, it becomes far less overwhelming. This guide walks you through the seven steps we go through with our clients every day.

1. Set a budget that feels right

Start with a number you are comfortable with – not with a rule of thumb. Your budget decides how you balance diamond size, quality and the metal of the band. With lab-grown diamonds you get noticeably more diamond for the same budget than with a mined stone of the same quality. Read more in our article How much does an engagement ring cost?

2. Choose the diamond shape

The shape defines the character of the ring more than anything else. Round brilliants deliver the most sparkle, ovals and pears elongate the finger, emerald cuts look calm and architectural, and cushions feel soft and romantic. Look at what your partner already wears – rounded or angular jewellery is a good hint. Our guide to diamond shapes shows every cut side by side.

3. Understand the 4Cs

Cut, colour, clarity and carat describe the quality of a diamond. Cut matters most for sparkle, while colour and clarity decide how clean and white the stone looks. At BEUSÉA we only use lab-grown diamonds in colour D – the highest colour grade – with clarity from VVS to VS1. Diamonds over 0.5 carat come with a certificate from the International Gemological Institute (IGI). The 4Cs explained covers every grade in detail.

4. Decide between lab-grown and mined

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds: pure carbon with the same crystal structure, hardness and fire as mined diamonds. The difference is their origin. They are created under controlled conditions instead of deep in the earth, which makes their provenance fully traceable. Lab-grown vs. natural diamonds explains the differences.

5. Pick the metal

Yellow gold feels warm and classic, white gold and platinum make a colourless diamond look even whiter, and rose gold adds a soft, romantic tone. We craft our rings in 10, 14 and 18 carat gold as well as 950 platinum. If your partner wears mostly silver-toned jewellery, white gold or platinum is usually the safer choice. Compare them in our precious metals guide.

6. Choose the setting and style

A classic solitaire puts all attention on the centre stone. A (hidden) halo adds extra sparkle, a three-stone ring tells a story, and a bezel setting protects the diamond – ideal for an active lifestyle. Think about daily life: how high the stone sits and how many claws hold it both matter. Our setting types guide helps you compare.

7. Find the right ring size

The ring size is the step most people worry about, especially for a surprise proposal. Borrow a ring your partner wears on the ring finger, or ask a friend or family member for help. Our ring size guide shows you how to measure and convert sizes. And if the ring does not fit perfectly, the first resize at BEUSÉA is free of charge.

Timing: plan three to four weeks

Every BEUSÉA ring is handcrafted to order by experienced goldsmiths, so it is made exactly in the metal, size and diamond you choose. Plan around three to four weeks for crafting; bespoke designs can take a little longer. Shipping is free and every parcel is insured until it reaches you. Please note that custom-made pieces such as engagement rings are excluded from the right of withdrawal – so it is worth taking your time with the decisions above.
